I think that empathy is also one of the most important things for students to demonstrate for their patient or client. I think it is a challenging area to teach students what empathy is. In community services students learn that people who are making difficult choices like using drugs or not caring for their children properly still deserve empathy without being judged and this is a tricky concept for students.
Hi Di! Yes, it can be challenging when it comes to understanding and accepting ALL kinds of people and NOT to judge anybody, because we don't know their history. That's also a reason why it's so important to discuss these subjects with the students, I think.
